Bram Stoker Award nominee Jeremy C. Shipp spins 13 tales of horror and dark humor in this highly conceptual collection.

About the Author:

Welcome Faith Shipp: Today you are thinking of purchasing one of my little books. I created these books for my own classroom and I am thrilled to share them with parents & teachers who want their children to read more than just about red dogs or fluffy bunnies.

Background of "THE WHY" I created my books!

As a kindergarten and first grade teacher of more than 25 years, I wanted my children to read more than just "fluff" books. So many of early reading books didn't correspond with the social studies and science standards. I did find books that covered these themes, but they were too difficult for my children to read. I started to write easy books for my children to read with themes integrated in them.

Also the requirements of kindergarten became higher and higher. The only way I could see to reach these high standards was to extend teaching into the homes. If my children were to accomplish these reading feats, the books must spill over past the school day. During the week my students would read these books in the classroom and then I sent them home for students to read them at home.

My students excelled with higher and higher reading scores. I could see that parents were an integral part of learning for my children. With reading in the home done each day, parents can truly become partners in teaching.

“Dawn Leslie Lenz’s character Chava Logan in “Zephyr of Ashes” is one of the more interesting, complex and endearing that I’ve encountered in any genre, let alone science fiction/fantasy. Her frailties, which include agoraphobia, its accompanying panic attacks and a certain innate shyness, actually buoy her survival capabilities as she experiences a horrific, inexplicable pandemic where people everywhere sacrifice themselves to the sun’s rays and spontaneously combust. The setting, San Francisco, lovely and familiar, is transmogrified into an unimaginable ruins of ashes, remnants of the unfathomable frenzy that has gripped the world, all the lovely streets and famous sites cloaked in death.

"Chava, though, does what agoraphobes do best: She hides in her efficiency apartment, her cat her only companion, and, avoiding the sun, makes a single evening foray to a neighborhood store to sustain the two of them. But supplies will someday run out. Are there any other survivors? What will she do when she must move on? Can anything, anybody rescue her? Like the people who have buckled to the irresistible lure of the sun in this rare world, a reader yields to Lenz’ mastery, word after word, page after page.

"There are so many ways to interpret this rich, fascinating work, which features a memorable, imaginative landscape, a deep psychological portrait, an unprecedented dilemma and, surprisingly, given these parameters, humor. You will never be able to watch narcissists on the beach or in the backyard again in quite the same way. And you’ll know that Mom’s advice was right: Don’t stay out too long in the sun, dear!"
--Tony Fitzpatrick, Author of Signals from the Heartland

"As we speak, the world is warming and experiencing its own corporeal collapse. It’s insightful to imagine the conditions that could prevail when unknown mysterious and realities such as a sun pandemic impose its wishes on the world. In “Zephyr of Ashes” Dawn Lenz attaches the unknown with the known, adds mystery to the already mysterious, and yes she prevails in illuminating and entertaining us with a very compelling story—as you would expect from an author of her caliber. Chava Logan, a mystery within a mystery, disabled because of panic attacks, has for five years been able to resist the temptation of the sun—deadlier and less subtle than any case of carcinoma—that has lured the world and reduced mankind to a group of doomed sunbathers. But it is Chava Logan and her feline companion, Vesper, who report to us, their most basic needs in a time when the world has changed leaving a zephyr of ashes. Bravo, Dawn Leslie Lenz!"

Mark’s Asperger’s Syndrome makes things hard for him at school. Mark’s mom and dad think MORE school is the answer. They can’t be right--can they? When they enroll Mark in the new taekwondo school nearby, he finds that his class is filled with adults--and four kids from his school he’s never met before. So now he’s got to meet new people (ugh), learn MORE new skills (ack), and oh yeah…somewhere in there, he’s got to figure out how not to flunk English.

Description:Gumshoe. Flatfoot. Bulldog. Professional snoop. They've got a lot of words for someone like me. Most of them you wouldn't say on a Sunday in front of your mother. It's not easy being a private investigator in a town where no one is innocent, but it's twice as hard if you're a woman. I have to be twice as tough, twice as sharp, and take ten times as much horse manure to solve every case I take. Good thing I'm also ten times as much of a detective as all the coppers down at the station put together. Not that it would take a lot, but you know what I mean.

Right. So it all started when a man from my past showed up at my door one dark, rainy night. Of course, it's Seattle. I don't have to tell you it rains here, right? Right. So he was pounding my door. I was pounding a drink. He had a problem in need of solving. I solved problems for a needy living. It was a match made in heaven. Except that matches start fires, and fires are more in line with the opposite of heaven. I didn't know it yet but that's right where my world was headed with this case: straight to hell, with a whiskey chaser. I was about to be a lot toastier than I really wanted to be, and things were just getting warmed up.

But hey, someone's got to do it. Why not me? Oh, right. Because I'm a dame, just a flatfoot floozie with a closet full of tar-black memories and a chip on my shoulder the size of Gibraltar. Maybe so. But I'll get this case solved no matter what it takes. Even if I have to call on skills I haven't used since my Master went off to combat Germany's special occult forces in the Great War. He never came back, and I'm still half-trained at best. Hopefully it's the right half. If not, I'm a walking obituary.

Remind me again why I do this for a living? Oh, that’s right: it's really not much of a living.

So it goes.

Like so many writers and mad scientists, Peter knew from an early age he was different from the other children. In the third grade he told his teachers he wanted to be a 'cemist' (sic) and although he has since fulfilled that precocious goal, his youthful ambitions in science came too late to fully obscure his first love; he had already written his first work of fiction a year prior, the accurately entitled A Second Grade Tragedy. Since that tender age these twin abiding passions have illuminated the oft-crooked path leading through both his formal and informal educations.

Peter was raised in Seattle, Washington. In 2011 his picture appeared in the New York Times for something that had nothing directly to do with writing, but coincidentally, his first self-published work also came out in 2011: a speculative fantasy novella titled The Burning Times (amzn.to/NnWUkS).

Ray’s parents are divorced and shuttling him back and forth. Nobody seems to realize how hard this has become for Ray. His only comforts are eating, and hiding out in video games. Now, gaming at school has gotten him suspended. Will taekwondo help him lose weight? Give him more discipline? His parents hope so. It’s the first thing they’ve agreed on in ages.

His gran doesn’t think Ray needs to worry about losing weight. She does agree he needs taekwondo, though. Taekwondo will mean somewhere to go, friends his age to spend time with outside of school, and something for Ray to feel good about besides his skill at video games.

Ray finds out that no matter how bad he thought things were, they can always get worse–and that when life punches you in the heart, it’s good to rely on friends who aren’t made out of sugar or pixels on a game screen.

Erin has never been secretive, but she's starting to wonder; is it still keeping a secret if you just don’t tell anybody? What if nobody asks?

Could what Margret and her friends (or henchmen) are doing be Erin's secret? Erin is being bullied at school. She hasn’t reported the abuse to anyone in charge, not her teachers, or her parents–she hasn’t even talked to her twin brother Tim about it. Erin believes her reasons for not discussing what’s going on are good. Or she did. She’s not so sure anymore.

The bullying has gone from insults to physical attacks that are getting dangerous. They’re bad enough that now Erin is scared to go to school. It’s stopped feeling like a safe place to be. Can what she’s learning in taekwondo help?

BLOCK! tells the tale of twins, Tim who has Asperger's and his sister Erin, who acts as his buffer. Unfortunately, Erin has problems of her own, in the form of a Mean Girl who makes snide comments. I'd recommend BLOCK! for any middle grade child, and definitely for the parents of kids this age."

Description:

Meet Mr. Yee's niece Zoe – she swings a mean bo staff, but doesn't usually use it in the kind of battles she fights. Zoe's spent a lot of time on her own because of her parents' professions, and has gotten used to taking care of herself. Now that she's one of the Marshmallows, though, she also has friends to take care of – to help, to teach, and to defend. Even Tim comes to trust her, both as friend and teacher.

But is there any good way to help and teach someone your age who's not your friend; who may not be, may never be, anybody's friend? When you're used to making your own rules, how far will you (or can you) go for a good cause? Once you accept a responsibility, what do you do if it conflicts with other responsibilities? Coping with life can require you to make some big stretches.

But even when she stretches herself to find a solution, Zoe realizes, a lot of where you go depends on where you've been in the past, on who you are in the very heart of you, and on who you come from.

Sometimes where you get to is someplace you never thought you'd go.

Description:
Gumshoe. Flatfoot.

This was quickly followed by the full-length fantasy novel Grimme (amzn.to/NQ6mMf), which likewise took place in an alternate-history setting known as The Europas Cycle. He co-edited and contributed to the acclaimed recent anthologie 20,001: A Steampunk Odyssey (amzn.to/LouVko). His Shakespearean Steampunk novella Full Fathom Five (amzn.to/SqSvgX) appears in the anthologie and as a stand-alone ebook. Disbelief, his first Paranormal Romance thriller, came out in Summer 2012. He is also the founder of Kindling Press, an independent epublishing imprint, along with co-founder Jason Vanhee.

Peter can be found on Twitter (@Peter_Smalley), FaceBook (facebook.com/peterasmalley), Google Plus, and occasionally hither but more often yon.

"BLOCK! is the second in the King of the Marshmallows series by Lydia Ondrusek. BLOCK! tells the tale of twins, Tim who has Asperger's and his sister Erin, who acts as his buffer. Unfortunately, Erin has problems of her own, in the form of a Mean Girl who makes snide comments. I'd recommend BLOCK! for any middle grade child, and definitely for the parents of kids this age."

In 1870, Jules Verne published 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, an instant classic of Victorian science fiction that took readers a fantastical journey beneath the waves with dreams of wondrous technologies. A century later, filmmaker Stanley Kubrick directed 2001: A Space Odyssey, a classic of modern science fiction film that took viewers on an even more fantastical journey into the stars...and showed them not only the wonders of technology, but also its terrors.

Now, in good speculative fiction style, ten authors will bring readers along on a journey that combines the two.

Whether diving beneath the waves or sailing among the clouds, readers of 20,001: A Steampunk Odyssey will see how technologies of a past that never was can spring to life with all the wonder of futures that might never be. Some futures are darker than others, however, and the cost of discoveries and innovation may be higher than any human being is willing to bear. In this anthologie readers will find aspects of both Verne and Kubrick: wonders and terrors await, and discoveries and adventures lie around every corner - not all of them pleasant. Find out for yourself what you will dare, how much you will risk, and how far you may go in this anthologie of ten tales of wonder and imagination. 20,001: A Steampunk Odyssey!

Description:

The American Civil War has ground the South into the dust for ten long years thanks in large part to the Anaconda Plan: with its naval dominance, the Union's unbeatable ironclad warships surround the entire South, slowly but surely constricting trade and isolating the Confederacy from any outside aid. Despite how long the South has been able to hold out, the end is assured.

Now two Confederate Secret Service agents and an engineer will take ship with a privateer captain and brave the Union naval blockade of New Orleans, daring the wrath of the North in a desperate attempt to reach Europe where Confederate gold can buy ironclad warships - and help the South win the Civil War. But when their ship is blown off course to an uncharted island somewhere in the Caribbean, the crew must decide if the best course for their mission lies with a European shipyard, or with the island's strange inhabitants. Whatever they choose, the course of the Civil War - and their own survival - hangs in the balance.

Full Fathom Five is a lovingly researched novella of war and bravery, love and betrayal, and soul-wrenching personal choices set against the rich backdrop of the American Civil War. Inspired by themes in Shakespeare, this story of one man's journey will remain with readers long after the final page is turned.
